FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF REBECCA
On her eighteenth birthday, Honor Harris meets Sir Richard Grenvile: he is proud, reckless - and utterly captivating. They have a rare connection, and with her beauty and sharp wit, she intrigues him too. But days before their wedding, tragedy strikes and Honor must reconcile herself to a life alone.
Fifteen years later, war forces Honor to shelter with her sister at the Cornish estate of Menabilly. There, she meets Richard, who has risen through the ranks to become a general in the king's army. With all of England in turmoil, Honor must draw on her courage to save Richard's life and defend her country.

A sad tale and not my favourite story from this author but as always her mastery for story telling shone through and her characters came to life and the country scenes filled the imagination.

As always I loved Daphne du Maurer's style of writing

This is a beautifully written book, I always find Daphne Du Maurier's books are written in such a beautiful way, escapism and almost poetic. I could visual the beautiful landscape of Cornwall and Menabilly. I loved the character of Honour, her bravery and her confidence to say exactly what she thought. I also have listened to Rebecca and Frenchman's Creek, both books I recommend too. I love an author with a gift to write so beautifully. 🤍 📚

A Beautifully Written Book

Story is quite drawn out. It could have been a lot shorter and sharper I nearly gave up. But the narrator is superb.

The blend of actual events and the story threading through brought the area and atmosphere to life . Distressing in places but a gripping book so well written, familiar with Jamaica Inn and Rebecca i I had not come across this story before but so glad I did, my interest in that era has now been well and truly piqued .

A fascinating insight into life in rural Cornwall during the civil war
