In Jennifer Egan's highly acclaimed first novel, set in 1978, the political drama and familial tensions of the 1960s form a backdrop for the world of Phoebe O'Connor, age 18.

Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister, Faith, a beautiful, idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. In order to find out the truth about Faith's life and death, Phoebe retraces her steps from San Francisco across Europe, a quest which yields both complex and disturbing revelations about family, love and Faith's lost generation.

This spellbinding audiobook introduced Egan's remarkable ability to tie suspense with deeply insightful characters and the nuances of emotion.

There are moments of brilliance in the prose here - a sign of things to come as this was her debut I think. Enjoyable overall and particularly good at subtly conveying dysfunctional family relationships, grief of loss and first passion. But the narrator’s accents and pronunciation of words is beyond distracting! She actually mis read a word so it became nonsensical in the the sentence. Don’t even get me started on the British accent (cringe)
I would read the book (don’t listen on audible!) if you’re a fan. If you’re a newbie to this author and only intend to read one or two books - start with goon squad or Manhattan.
