The mesmerising new novel from the winner of the Costa Short Story Award, following her debut novel Himself.
Maud Drennan - underpaid carer and unintentional psychic - is the latest in a long line of dogsbodies for the ancient, belligerent Cathal Flood. Yet despite her best efforts, Maud is drawn into the mysteries concealed in his filthy, once-grand home. She realises that Cathal, and the junk-filled rooms, are opening up to her. With only her landlady and a troop of sarcastic ghostly saints to help, Maud must uncover what lies beneath Cathal's decades-old hostility, and the strange activities of the house itself.

This book has everything, it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s life, I didn’t want it to end. The narration is perfect and made the characters come to life in my imagination.

I first listened to "Himself" and adored it. I thought I wonder if she could
deliver again, and my goodness she has. Just pure joy.

I love Jess Kidd

I don't think I've ever encountered a book quite like this before, which makes it rather difficult to write a review that in any way describes it, so I shall simply say that the writing is breathtaking, the narration is spellbinding, and I was captivated from the first word to the last.

Weird, but truly wonderful

I loved this book which was brilliantly narrated. The writing made me smile and the descriptions were like poetry in places. Listened to it over a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Brilliant narration and engaging story

I found parts of the book confusing. If you're not giving it your 100% attention you will get lost. Beautiful descriptions but sometimes overdone. In the early days I didn't think I'd get to the end with Aoife MacMahon's beautiful irish accent narration the only thing getting me through. I loved the character Renata she brought some sparkle to the book. I still didn't understand the ending, I'll have to go on Good Reads for spoliers
. Ok, not the best mystery book out there, certainly I've read better but some beautiful phrasing by Kidd and spot on Irish collequialisms.

ok a little difficult to follow sometimes
