'What a fool I've been not to have read Peter James until The Hawk Is Dead! A great story' – James Patterson, bestselling author of the Alex Cross series

Roy Grace never dreamed a murder investigation would take him deep into Buckingham Palace . . .

Her Majesty, Queen Camilla, is aboard the Royal Train heading to a charity event in Sussex when disaster strikes – the train is derailed.

A tragic accident or a planned attack?

When, minutes later, a trusted aide is shot dead by a sniper, the police have their answer.

Despite all the evidence, Roy Grace is not convinced The Queen was the intended target. But he finds himself alone in his suspicions.

Fighting against the scepticism of his colleagues and the Palace itself, Grace pursues his own investigation. But when there is a second murder, the stakes rise even higher, and Grace is at risk of being embroiled in a very public catastrophe – and in mortal danger.

Failure at this level is not an option. But time is running out before a killer in the Palace will strike again . . .

Roy Grace is back with his most difficult case yet in the gripping new instalment from number one bestselling author Peter James.

You can listen to Peter James discussing the Roy Grace series with Her Majesty Queen Camilla on The Queen's Reading Room podcast.

I always eagerly anticipate the next Roy Grace book. This one has disappointed me however. I knew from the beginning that it was not for me but I was determined to finish.
I am a supporter of the Monarchy but this was too much. In fact the deference and titles were quite off putting.

I rushed through it so it would be over

It was okaayyyy but for me the weakest of the series so far. Performance was as great as ever but you could tell that this was a bit of pandering to Camilla, it didn't advance Grace's personal story in anyway, felt more like a book 20.5 than a book 21. I do also feel that with all of Grace's main storylines wrapped up now the series may go a bit downhill and become just churning them out for the sake of it, but we will see, hopefully Peter James has some good ideas to keep the series fresh but we'll see.

Felt a bit Forced

PR for the royals, repetitive at times, almost feels like it could have been written using AI.

Been a fan of Roy Grace for ever but not this time

This book was the least Peter James style ever. Bringing in real people to the action , especially royalty, was a big mistake. The first 32 chapters felt extremely contrived and rather too subservient. The story disappeared into a mish mash of un needed words and repeated descriptors. Such a shame, a parody of the usual , believable and exciting action. Add to this the exaggerated attempt at Camilla’s accent by the reader, finished it for me. I will reluctantly, return this book.

A plummy over representation, and long winded …. So disappointed
