Özet
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

Winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2018 and the Children's Book of the Year 2018 at the British Book Awards.

I got this book without knowing too much about it and tbh probably wouldn't have listened to it if I knew it was in the young adult category of fiction (me being a middle-aged man) But having said that even though it does feel very YA at times with a lot of focus on teenage concerns (early relationships, teen entertainment) and some of the dialogue feels a little clunky, I still got caught up in the story, characters and it's dealing with the ills of society. It does develop somewhat predictably but that's sort of in keeping with the feel of the book.
One thing which makes it as entertaining as it is, is the narration by Bahni Turpin, which is excellent and one of the best performances I've heard on an audiobook.
Overall I recommend it with maybe some reservations if you're an old codger like me (glad I listened to it overall though) and I think younger readers would gain a lot from its powerful message.

Entertaining, powerful but a bit YA

I have not seen the movie, but if it's as amazing as this audio book then I will take the time out to watch it.

Bahni Turpin's narration is oscar worthy.

brilliant

Well written, well narrated, nuanced emotional and strong. It's true that thid book deals with important and serious themes, but it doesn't get 5 stars for that alone. The characters and settings are wonderfully developed and the book has poignant symbolism and quote-worthy lines.

Outstanding not just because of the themes.

Excellent story, absolutely brilliantly narrated. Highly recommended.

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this. I'd seen it recommended and wanted to make a conscious decision to support black authors in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement being at the forefront of our lives. I didn't realise this book was going to be so relevant and very much enjoyed that it was.

This book was such a rollercoaster of emotions, I cried, I laughed; I felt Starr's emotions throughout. More than that, this is one of the best written families I've read, the relationships between them were beautiful and real.

The narration was absolutely top class; I actually forgot it was just one person because the characters came alive so well, and so clearly.

Maybe it's because I'm an author myself and understand the importance of reviews, but I couldn't wait to review this; before I'd even finished it.

I loved it. I can't wait to read more from this author, and hear more from this narrator. Fantastic

Fantastic in every way

Brilliantly written and performed. So poignant and relevant that it feels like a true story. I cried (a lot) but also laughed out loud because the characters were just so believable. I will be looking out for more Angie Thomas books and also making my teenage daughter read (or listen to) this.
