The Forsyte Saga chronicles the ebbing social power of the upper-middle-class Forsyte family through three generations, beginning in Victorian London during the 1880s and ending in the early 1920s. The saga begins with Soames Forsyte, a successful solicitor who buys land at Robin Hill on which to build a house for his wife, Irene, and future family. Eventually, the Forsyte family begins to disintegrate when Timothy Forsyte, the last of the old generation, dies at the age of one hundred.

In the three novels (The Man of Property, In Chancery, and To Let) and two interludes ("Awakening" and "Indian Summer of a Forsyte") that comprise the saga, Galsworthy documented a departed way of life, that of the affluent middle class that ruled England before the 1914 war. Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women.

Eleştirmen yorumları

“A social satire of epic proportions…[A] comedy of manners, convincing both in its fidelity to life and as a work of art.”

(New York Times)

“The characters themselves are recognizable and compelling, and Galsworthy still hits his targets—materialism, selfishness, insensitivity, possessiveness—with force and accuracy.”

(The Guardian (London))

“Richly satirical.”

(Post-Gazette.com)

“[Galsworthy] possesses two essential gifts: storytelling and the creation of character. He also displays the acuteness and tenacity of imagination not only to create an immensely detailed and consistent social world but to record its inner transmutation over a period of time.”

(Geoffrey Harvey, senior lecturer, Reading University)

It's a pleasure listening to the narration.
Maybe life was different 100 years ago but the human hearts were the same.

What made the experience of listening to The Forsyte Saga the most enjoyable?

What might feel somewhat unnatural and too elaborated in this drama in the beginning, thanks to the performer, becomes a truly enjoyable and insightful experience. By the end I new far more about Victorians, why the novel won Nobel Prize and why it is beloved by generations of British readers.

What other book might you compare The Forsyte Saga to, and why?

Being Russian I couldn't help comparing Galsworthy with great Russian writers. I would try to listen to the translation of the 'War and Piece' right after

What does Fred Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Amazingly precise intonations and subtle meanings.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The 'Summer interlude' is very touching especially with this performance

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended

Would you listen to The Forsyte Saga again? Why?

The charactres are timeless, and speak to two 70+ listeners almost with the words of an agony aunt

What other book might you compare The Forsyte Saga to, and why?

The best comparison would be My Brilliant Friend, by Elenor Ferrante, as the characters grow and expand with each of the many volumes.....and become part of ones life

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The death of Old Jolyon, while waiting in a midsummer garden, for possibly the old real love of his life, despite Old J being 85, and Irene 20 something. Extremely touching, and a wonderul depiction of old age and loss.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Hardly, at 42 hours!

Any additional comments?

Excellent reading, despite all the negative comments above....no histrionics, and each word enunciated fully, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, no great sucking sound, from the intake of breath at the end of each sentence.
This is just basic breathing technique, but not many pro readers are capable of it.

An excellent reading of a fabulous book
