A Richard and Judy Book Club Selection.
Shortlisted for The Guardian First Book Award, 2005.

A warm, funny, moving, and unsentimental tale of one family and the English countryside. After 200 years of farming in Yorkshire, the Benson family was forced to sell up. They found, like so many, that the land could no longer support them. While the farming way of life never came naturally to Richard Benson, a point that sent him running to London, he still feels his parents' loss and returns to do what he can to help. In The Farm he tells of his childhood, the changing landscape, and of how his family has adapted to a new life after being forced to give up their birthright.

The truthful portrayal of survival in rural Britain, relating the wonderful dry wit of those that live and breathe the land, their deep connection and knowledge which only comes from generations of working it. The author is sensitive and searching in his efforts to make sense of modern farming methods and allows the reader a generous insight into how change can also bring hope. A wonderful read where the characters live on long after the book is finished.

A special book exploring the rich complexity of rural life
