Jeremy Summers, a British banker with a secret that could reveal MI6 intelligence sources involved in the war against drug-funded terrorism has been seized at gunpoint, in broad daylight, on the streets of west London. An old contact, Raglan – an Englishman who served in the French Foreign Legion – is on his trail.

Raglan's pursuit will lead him to the winter-ravaged wasteland of a remote Russian penal colony. A place that holds Russia's most brutal murderers. A place of death and retribution. How will he get in? More importantly, how will he get out... alive?

Where to start with this exhilarating story, the Englishman is a strong, well rounded character. He is more savvy, tougher and not at all showy. The Englishman is a no nonsense man, he is a conpelling character, not afraid to show a soft side and loyalty is his watch word. The supporting cast were all fantastic too, the enigmatic secret service operatives, the loving family he fights to help and the vile enemy he chases down... each and every one is created with great care to make this a truly awesome book.
David Gilman doesn't hold back with the action from the first page to the last... the story is told at an exciting pace, and it delivers. From the deserts of North Africa to the streets of London, and it felt like I was with him all the way, and loved every mile.
And then when you think it can't get any better, the story goes up another level and your anticipation increases... The Englishman will have you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath and cheering for the hero.
Gilman is one of the best Historical Fiction writers around, and with this book he's thrown his hat into the ring to be recognised as one of the best thriller/adventure writers too.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Brilliantly written book, and well narrated.

This audio book gripped me from start to finish the only thing that would have made it better would be the ending with Raglans cell mate opening a package of new slippers!

Gripping listen

Started slowly and initially I struggled to get to grips with the characters but both plot and characterisation improved the deeper in I got, and overall I really enjoyed it. Frederick Forsyth levels of research support the plot which developed in really interesting directions. Enjoyable, and excellently performed by Matt Addis. Someone must be haggling over screenplay rights for this one!

Enjoyable listen with excellent performance. Storyline is a bit far fetched but managed to persevere with it.
