Italy in 1819. Emilia Barton and her mother, Sarah, live a nomadic existence, travelling from town to town as itinerant dressmakers to escape their past. When they settle in the idyllic coastal town of Pesaro, Emilia desperately hopes that this time they have found a permanent home. But when Sarah is brutally attacked by an unknown assailant, a deathbed confession turns Emilia's world upside down.

Seeking refuge as a dressmaker in the eccentric household of Princess Caroline of Brunswick, Emilia experiences her first taste of love with the charming Alessandro. But her troubling history gnaws away at her. Might she, a humble dressmaker's daughter, have a more aristocratic past than she could have imagined?

When the Princess sends her on an assignment to London, Emilia grasps the opportunity to unravel the truth. Caught up in a web of treachery and deceit, she is determined to discover who she really is - even if she risks losing everything....

All in all, a great read except for the fact that there wasn't much about dressmaking which is why I chose the book in the first place.
Enjoyed the second halft better, which is when the mystery started to unravel. Although I had already worked it out for myself.
Loved the dad's character and his love for art till his death.

Slow paced with a decent plot

I guessed some of the storyline as it went along but still enjoyed it and could see the characters in my minds eye.

enjoyable if not predictable book

I would have given this 3.5 starts if I could. This is the third Charlotte Betts novel I've read and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the other two. it was a little predictable and far fetched in some cases, however I still enjoyed it even though everything was conveniently wrapped up for a happy ever after.

Enjoyable

This is a great mixture of fact and fiction which I just loved, could not stop listening. Great story, believable characters, very much looking forward to the next book.

I cannot recommend this book enough
