'WALKER'S FINEST YET ... A FIRST-RATE MYSTERY' - Entertainment Weekly

Bruno, Chief of Police, investigates when a body is found floating in the river showing marks of Satanism. France's favourite cop must track down a murderer while quelling his town's superstitious fears in this page-turning mystery, part of an internationally bestselling series.

It is springtime France's Périgord, a time of beauty and calm. But not for Bruno, chief of police of the small town of St Denis. A woman's body has been found on a boat, bearing signs of a black magic ritual.

Bruno has too much on his plate as it is - mediating a domestic abuse case that needs careful handling and a dodgy local development proposal that seems just too good to be true.

But a murder case must take precedent and the roots of this one lie buried deep in the past - linked to a chateau above a bend in the river, to the reclusive old woman who lives there, and to the secret hidden in the Devil's Cave.

Maybe it’s my age, but I found this book utterly confusing. Gave up in the end.

Disappointing

Don't like the narrator, who uses comic French accents for many characters, usually those from less affluent society, but Bruno escapes this Clouseau treatment. It would be better to choose an appropriate UK accent, which wouldn't seem so patronising. Bill Wallis did a good job, as always, but he's no longer available, and much missed.
Saint Denis is again the window dressing for vice and evil; the arcane organisation of French law enforcement and policing cause the usual problems, and as the title implies, there's a mix of sacrilege and blasphemy. (I do question the liturgy of the exorcism Mass - in Holy Week, to complicate proper form even more - but I've never been to an exorcism, just lots of Masses.)
Still, I enjoyed it, and can accept, if not appreciate, the performer.

Good story, tense and complex

"The Devil's Cave" is another brilliant mystery in which the relationships and stories of the people of St. Denis deepen and develop. I discovered this series accidentally, but now I am addicted! Can't wait to see what the next St. Denis mystery brings!

An intriguing mystery.

All of it, wonderful descriptions and understanding of the French Paysan psyche and most excellent reading.

I have only just discovered the Bruno Chief of Police books but, from my first free taster, I am now slowly working my way through them. I love crime dramas and France so it's a great mix for me. I do not understand the obsession with modern authors to shoe-horn recipes into novels. It seems particularly bizarre with crime dramas but I suppose, if any could be excused, it's one set in France! That said, I take no pleasure in listening to recipes, or descriptions of how the characters then ate the meal, so tended to skip past those bits. I enjoyed this story very much and found it not too gory, gripping and entertaining right to the very end. On to the next now!

Thoroughly Enjoyable
