In 1974 the brilliant and controversial Brian Clough made perhaps his most eccentric decision: he accepted the Leeds United Manager's job. As successor to Don Revie, his bitter adversary, he was to last 44 days. David Peace takes us into the mind and thoughts of Ol' Big 'Ead himself and brings vividly to life one of postwar Britain's most complex and fascinating characters.

Well read and interesting story from a long gone age. would have liked it to make reference to the subsequent success to round out the overall impression.

Good listen

A great football book that really brings the inside story of Clough’s early managerial career.

I really enjoyed reading this and couldn’t put it down

I liked the names of derby forest Leeds spurs the other teams I can't remember but overall the book is a good listen and Brian Howard Clough sounds just like home so very pleased with the storyline

the names of the football teams ⚽

John Simm gives a brilliant narration of a savage, funny and well observed black comedy based on real events.

Why not five stars? Because some clown decided to abridge it. It's David Peace's most accessible novel, it's not very long by modern novel standards. So next time - give us the complete version please.

So good but why was it abridged?!?

Watched the film many years ago and remains one of my all time favourites so wanted to do it it justice and listen to the original. John Simm is outstanding. His tempo and dynamism in his performance allows the listener to feel truly involved and appreciate the life of one of footballs greatest characters!

A brilliantly written book but Sims takes it to new heights
