Arthur C Clarke is without question the world's best-known and most celebrated science fiction writer. His career, spanning more than sixty years, is one of unequalled success. Clarke has always been celebrated for his clear prophetic vision, which is fully on display in this audiobook, but there are also many stories which show his imagination in full flight, to the distant future and to far-flung star systems. It’s many years since I devoured all I could find by Arthur C Clarke. I’m delighted to find these stories nestle comfortably in the 21st Century. They’re beautifully read too. A delight.

Timeless

On the whole an excellent collection and certainly very entertaining. My main criticism - and it's a personal taste issue - is that the 'Tales from the White Hart' were rather dominant in this volume. They were fun, on the whole, but not my taste in Sci Fi. I preferred Volume 2.

A few too many 'Tales from the White Hart'?

Good performances and a decent selection of stories, although not my favourite collection of Clarke's short stories.

But really, a short story collection with just numbers for chapter titles!? It's lazy production and makes it huge pain to find out what's in it (you literally have to listen to the first few seconds of each chapter, or minutes in the case of the first one because they didn't bother to separate the preface either) and also to find a particular story. Even paper books have a contents page!

Good readers, reasonable selection but NO TITLES!

With a collection of short stories it's hard to give a single opinion on how good it was. some of these deserve a full book/film/TV series made of them and others I skipped after a few minutes. Over all worth a look because you can skip to a new story at any point but you will be disappointed when a story with great potential ends after 30 minutes.

A mixture of enjoyable works

Arthur C Clarke’s imagination in respect of Sci Fi is surely second to none, and a few of these stories are classics. But there are too many from his ‘Tales from the White Hart’ which, despite being full of unique ideas, are just a little twee for my taste. Elsewhere, his dialogue can become lumpen and pedestrian. When he is good, he is very good, unfortunately few in this anthology fall into that category.

The narrators here were, on the whole, competent—including the superb Sean Barrett—but there are two other glaring criticisms apart from the choice of material: instead of listing the story names, just chapter headings are given! This makes it impossible to select individual favourites. But the very worst production failure is the entire absence of any gap whatsoever between stories. A wonderful denouement has just been delivered, and without any time to savour the thrill or to reflect, without taking a breath, the title of the next story is announced. Time and again I nearly shouted my frustration when this happened. I have noted this monumental sloppiness previously in story anthologies, notably in Bradbury’s ‘Illustrated Man’.

This group is a long way from being representative of Clarke's genius.

Decidedly 'Curate's egg'
