There was a point when I felt I might end up not finishing this one, something I really don’t like doing. I’d find myself drifting off and having to replay sections. Then the story took a turn and I found myself more and more getting into it. A pleasant surprise indeed. Whilst the narration was good it wasn’t the sort to help draw you into the story. All in all a decent listen and I’m sure I’ll try the next in the series before long.

Surprising

Good things: 1. Really liked the author's style of writing; 2. Really sympathetic development of female protagonist's character; 3. I liked the realism of the interaction between the characters; 4, The way the story developed had me hooked; 5. Very unexpected plot resolution; 6. Narrator very good other than the surprising lack of Welsh accents.

Not so great: 1. Extraordinary / unrealistic pursuit to resolution; 2. Actually one of the most horrific courses to revenge I have ever read; 3. Resolution possible, but extremely far from probable.

Not sure how I feel about out this book. I enjoyed the authors writing style and the narration, but the female protagonist really irritated me; I felt she desperately needed psychiatric help & shouldn’t have been in the position of police inspector, making judgements about other people. The self-harming aspects were difficult to listen to and actually nauseated me - great that an author has the capability to arose such emotions in a reader, but I felt personally that the descriptions were too graphic and unnecessary & I actually skipped over these parts of the book. I loved the story line, but am not sure I want to read another in this series and have to listen to the tedious descriptions of a disturbed police inspectors self-harm. I do wonder if there should be a warning to readers regarding the explicit descriptions around self-harm and mental health issues?

Enjoyed listening to this one. Wasn’t all complicated & brain taxing but flowed well I would be interested to read the others in the collection and if the author released any other ones.

interesting, but the plot became waaaay too fantastical. I'd given up on the willing suspension of disbelief and just went with disbelief.
