'I am a fortunate woman to have such an eventful life,' observes Mma Ramotswe. Perhaps, but there are times when rather too much seems to be happening. This latest despatch from Botswana is certainly full of events, even if it starts with a leisurely trip to buy a pair of shoes for Mr J.L.B. Matekoni.

As often happens, one thing leads to another, and we are soon caught up in an ill-thought-out plan hatched by Charlie, junior mechanic and trainee detective. Charlie has met up with two rising stars of the local musical world – jazz players known as Lion and Leopard. He is keen to plan a big event with them, even though Mma Makutsi sees nothing but disaster ahead.

Mma Ramotswe would like to keep an eye on the situation, but she has to go up north, to the Okavango Delta, where her friends at an elephant sanctuary are battling with a campaign being waged against them. Mma Ramotswe's help is given with all the generosity of spirit that illuminates the character of this most beloved of lady detectives.

Having listened to every one of the 1LDA audio books over the years, I was surprised to see a new narrator for book 27. Adjoa Andoh’s are huge shoes to fill – even Mma Grace Makutsi would struggle to make the fit! I need not have worried. Chipo Chung has an impressive narration profile already, and I soon warmed to her voice and performance here. Another feel good story from Alexander McCall Smith carries you along to the tying up of loose ends, alongside characteristic reminders about the importance of human kindness in a dark, sad world. (Michael).

As always brilliant little feel good innocent story. Loving new narrator, hope she continues to read these.

Story and narrator

A new narrator (although not a bad performance at all) after book 26 is really difficult to get used to. I am unsure if I will continue the series.

The lack of Asjuah Ando made this book sadly unfamiliar , the story seemed to drag because of this , nothing about the characterisation was the same .
I hope it gets re recorded soon . Thanks to AMcSmith for the DA book . Look forward to a new version !

The Ma Ramotswe story

I really didn't like the intrusive negative tension in narrator tone which really distorted the context throughout. I didn't finish the book. First time ever.

The change of narrator has really detracted from the telling
