In the 1500s an almanac full of magic spells was put together by someone intent on bringing about the End Times. It has resurfaced and is being used indiscriminately.

Legend insists it was compiled in that period by a cabal of powerful occultists. Its magic is summoned only at disastrous cost, signalled by the Auguries. Juliet is convinced that the recent plague of disasters means someone reckless is using the book - and she has little time left to stop them.

in the current Covid lockdown/here comes Armageddon world we all inhabit this story didn't feel extreme in the slightest...I suspect if I'd read it a couple of years ago it might have done but in this climate of early 2021 I don't think I would be surprised in the slightest at the events which unfold. The story runs along at a good pace...interesting characters...only slight downer is a bit of a damp squib ending...might have needed a bigger bang ...that said still enjoyed it a lot as I always have FGC's other work.

loved it , it's different to F.G other books but I really like it.I have every book from F.G Cottam that came out on Audible and this one feels different but I was hooked from the beginning to the end

Wow a story with some interesting twists

I love F.G.Cottam books, but this one is totally let down by the narration which was lifeless, over pronounced and did not bring the characters to life. The story may well have been better but I gave up. Narrations of his other books , by David Rintoul in particular, have been outstanding. This would benefit from a re-recording.

I have listened to all the FG Cottoms and enjoyed most, Dark Echo being the best and Brodmaw Bay the worst. I left this till last because of that complaints against the narrator. I found her tolerable though she drains all the life from the reading, the school girlish delivery renders everything glib and ironic. Second there's the ending. Whilst the main body of the plot was enjoyable, the ending was embarrassing, Cottom has an issue with weak endings, the worst offender (I thought) being The Magdalena Curse. This IS the worst. Worth it for a completionist otherwise skip it.

for a new recording the quality of the audio is surprisingly poor. it's very muffled sounding.
The premise sounded good but the writing hasn't been wholly believable and hasn't dragged me in at all.
