Teddy has earned a fresh start. But some secrets just won't stay hidden…

It is the summer of 1969 and Rome is awash with glamour and intrigue. Teddy Huntley Carlyle is fresh off a plane from Texas with a new husband in tow and a new life on the horizon. After some wayward years of bad men and bad decisions, she’s promised herself a fresh start. In Rome, Teddy will be good. She will wear the right clothes and the perfect lipstick and she will charm her husband’s colleagues at the Embassy.

And Teddy is good, until the Fourth of July, when her new life explodes with the fireworks above her head. She is caught on camera in the arms of the American ambassador just moments after spotting a man from the darkest corner of her past across the room. There it is: the evidence of her depravity on film. Trying to recover the photographs and keep her reputation intact, Teddy descends into the dark underbelly of the city… but is she in over her head?

I loved this book; the world it inhabits - of glamour, broken mirrors and chipped gilt. The writing itself is taut yet lyrical, the relationship between narrator and reader as intense as a love affair. If you love Edward Hopper, Anaiis Nin, F Scott Fitzgerald and Alice Munro then this is for you. Pour yourself a glass of something strong, light candles, open windows to the night air, and enjoy.

Gorgeous

After seeing the reviews I was expecting something fabulous to listen too, what I got was, a story of a women who just lived life on the edge a little, perhaps doing a lot of things her family would not be proud of. Finally she married and believes she can settle down and put her secrets into a locked cupboard. I found the story boring at times, I didn’t overly like the characters either.

Not as good as I hoped

I loved this book from the start
It’s a brilliant story, the period ( the 60’s) was described beautifully, as well as the locations … and even her outfits !
Loved every minute of it

Mesmerising Story

Loved this story, a very different book for me, very cinematic in description. Leads to some surprising twists. Recommend.

Teddy is a great protagonist - would make a fabulous film!

So many dead ends to the stories. Kept waiting to find out what the big secret was…heads-up, there’s NOT one!!!

Disappointing.
