A gripping account of the Second World War, from the perspective of a young tank commander.

In 1944, David Render was a nineteen-year-old second lieutenant fresh from Sandhurst when he was sent to France. Joining the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry five days after the D-Day landings, the combat-hardened men he was sent to command did not expect him to last long. However, in the following weeks of ferocious fighting in which more than 90 per cent of his fellow tank commanders became casualties, his ability to emerge unscathed from countless combat engagements earned him the nickname of the 'Inevitable Mr Render'.

In Tank Action Render tells his remarkable story, spanning every major episode of the last year of the Second World War from the invasion of Normandy to the fall of Germany. Ultimately it is a story of survival, comradeship and the ability to stand up and be counted as a leader in combat.

This is a great book. It gets out of the usual big sweeps of history you normally get from books of this time. You can almost smell the the petrol and the metal of the tank and gets you down and dirty with war at the coal face

You watch films like Fury and think "Yeah, I'm sure there was some stuff that went down like that, especially in the American and Russian armed forces, but not so much in the British formations" but on reading this book and listening to it on audible you see that war was a cruel nasty business and that everyone took part in the darker side of it, including shooting unarmed enemy soldiers as they bailed out of their tank and were no longer a threat, running over men and grinding them under tank tracks, shooting men with their hands up.. The more I read the more I find it laughable that we jail and ruin the lives of our soldiers for shooting a already dying enemy in Afghanistan or hunt for war crimes amongst our special forces because they may of killed an enemy when he was pretending to be a farmer but we all really know he's the enemy but then we celebrate and hail as heroes the men of world war 2 who have done far worse on a far greater scale.. its crazy.. If you don't believe me then believe the man himself and read his book, he holds nothing back, its a honest and brutal book.

Fury wasn't far wrong
