Neil Gaiman Presents: the fourth book in Fritz Leiber's classic sword-and-sorcery series.

In Swords Against Wizardry, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, sent by a witch on a foolhardy journey, return to the icy reaches of the north in search of dubious treasure.

There, they are seduced by the glittering attractions of an ice woman, who brings them with her to her shadowy lair. The brothers-in-arms are overwhelmed by intimations of power and rise to become the overlords of Quarmall, a dangerous region of lies, magic, and swords.

The late Fritz Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser launched the sword-and-sorcery genre, and were the inspiration for the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons.

Eleştirmen yorumları

"I'm an enormous fan of Fritz Leiber's." (Neil Gaiman)
"Fritz Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are virtually a genre unto themselves. Urbane, idiosyncratic, comic, erotic and human, spiked with believable action and the eerie creations of a master fantasist!" (William Gibson)

During my lifetime this is my third rereading of these stories, which I first read in my teens: I am now late 50s. Besides being one of the the inventors of the Swords and Sorcery genre, Leiber is pretty much the only one who is any good, and he is very, very good. The mismatched heroes are likeable and amusing, and the improbability of their deeds is somehow probable in their world view. The Lords of Quarmal bears some similarity to Red Nails by Howard, and I wonder if this story was an influence. My favorite moment is the Mousers casting of his spell, with spectacular and hilarious effect. I am looking forward to revisiting Swords of Lankhmar.
