Rosie Strange doesn't believe in ghosts or witches or magic. It's no surprise therefore that when she inherits the ramshackle Essex Witch Museum, her first thought is to take the money and run.
Still, the museum exerts a curious pull over Rosie. There's the eccentric academic who bustles in to demand she help in a hunt for the bones of the notorious Ursula Cadence, a witch long since put to death. And there's curator Sam Stone, a man about whom Rosie can't decide if he's tiresomely annoying or extremely captivating.
Finding herself and Sam embroiled in a peculiar centuries-old mystery, Rosie quickly discovers that the secrets of the past come with their own real danger as a strange magic threatens to envelop them all.

As I listened and realised what one of the main characters ( the one telling the story) 'day job' is I wondered how this would work out as its certainly different. I don't think I have ever come across this job being mentioned except when an author has their characters is being derogatory about it.
This time we are seeing the person who does this job as a real human being which is nice as in this day and age - especially in the UK - they are usually seen as the equivalent of the old witchfinders and prosecutors - I wonder if this is why the author choose this profession for them - could they be, I wonder, having a dig at the modern 'witch hunt' that appears to being going on in this day and age.
Not a quick moving story but no less enjoyable for that as I enjoyed hearing about the background that was given - not much but presumes it will be expanded upon as the series progresses.
We also get the thoughts and feelings of the character telling the story and to me they not only are being exposed to a whole new world but also given because of it the chance to examine themselves as a person and we 'listen to their thoughts as they start their travels through it and we see them start to grow.
I might be reading more into the book than was intended but to me it's certainly not just a book about two people who solve mysteries.
Overall I enjoyed it - already listening to the second book in series.
