In a universe obsessed with hyper-drive technology, an eighteen-year-old girl named Becca dreams of escaping her family's hardships through the grandest intergalactic race. This perilous competition takes racers through treacherous routes near black holes and pulsars, where survival is a matter of skill, determination, and sometimes sheer luck.
Becca's victory in the race is both a triumph and a reminder of her father's mysterious death years ago, rumored to be sabotage. As she faces mockery and jeering from her fellow racers, Becca secures a million gold-grelda-metal bars and a coveted spot at the military academy, a mandatory service for all millionaires.
Life at the academy proves grueling, but Becca forms a bond with Alex, a fellow racer. When orders come for an emergency mission to quash a rebellion on the distant planet of Veridion, Becca's conflicting emotions about serving in the empire's wars become apparent.
