Starfleet diplomat Captain Hikaru Sulu is transported by powerful, frightening dreams to the desolate desert world of Sigma Cameron Four. It was there, as Commander of the U.S.S. Excelsior 20 years earlier, that he discovered traces of the ancient Shalakai -- a ruthless culture who, legend held, had once uncovered the secret to eternal life. Driven to find that secret, Sulu's brilliant science officer, Commander Flynn Konner, launched a fateful mission whose outcome would forever haunt the Excelsior crew. Now, 20 years later, as the distinguished archeologist Dr. Constance Allenwood moves closer to uncovering the Shalakai's secrets on Sigma Cameron Four, Sulu must race to stop her before she unleashes a disastrous chain of events.© and (P)1994 Paramount Pictures, All Rights Reserved; AUDIOWORKS Is an Imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster Inc. Captain Sulu tries to warn a prominent archaeologist away from a planet which cost his Girst Officer his mind.

The idea of an audio version of 'Star Trek' shouldn't be dismissed. The series was always about ideas and was quite 'talky' on screen.

The script is good for a start, linking back to "Return to Tomorrow", with a similar alien able to keep his consciousness in a technological sphere to take over someone's mind, as well as discussing the idea of the Katra.

The story lingers on friendships and relationships, something 'Star Trek' was better at in story than it was off screen. Sulu's guilt and pain over the events of the story still feels real and the archaeologists messages home are warm and full of love for her granddaughter.

There is also the sense of technology moving towards the Next Generation era. Sulu clearly describes an LCARS terminal on his shuttle.

What is great though is how the story manages with only three voice actors (and four characters). It never feels forced and creates a template for further such audio adventures.
