Could anything be worse than to be trapped in a confined space with the woman you love?

Fitzwilliam Darcy knows his duty, and it does not involve succumbing to his fascination for a dark-eyed beauty from an unheard of family in Hertfordshire. He has run away from her once already. Yet fate has a wicked sense of humour and deals him a blow that not only throws him back into her path but quite literally puts him at Elizabeth Bennet’s mercy. Stranded with her at a remote inn and seriously hampered by injury, Darcy very quickly loses the battle to conquer his feelings, but can he win the war to make himself better understood without the ability to speak?

Thus begins an intense journey to love and understanding that is at times harrowing, sometimes hilarious and at all times heart-warming.

I enjoyed this book, and it’s far better than many other Jane Austen Fan Fiction stories. I believed in the characters and their relationship, and I’ll get more by this author.

Enjoyable

I chose this as I have enjoyed other Jessie Lewis books.
This was an original twist with Darcy seriously injured and forced into close proximity with Elizabeth. Lots of good interactions and some amusing side characters. Darcy's family are pretty unpleasant to Elizabeth when they eventually appear.
Narrator is not the best but OK, must have been quite difficult to sound so hoarse all the time when Darcy is struggling to speak!!

Shortish charming and amusing variation

Such a shame this narrator really lets this audiobook down. It’s a really inventive P&P variation and a great story. At times the narrator sounds robotic and I even thought it might be AI. Very strange.

Brilliant story, robotic narrator.

Speechless is a beautifully written and very original P&P variation. The unusual twist to canon events offers Darcy and Elizabeth plenty of time to spend alone together and get to know each other -- always a big plus. A light, rewarding read, the story moves on at a perfect pace and finishes just when it should, not a dull moment in sight. I highly recommend it!

Altogether charming

One of the very few genuinely good P&P Variations, read it a few years ago, now listened to it with pleasure.

Inspired
