Lily is a photojournalist in search of the “animal people” who supposedly haunt the city’s darkest slums. Hank is a slumdweller who knows the bad streets all too well. One night, in a brutal incident, their two lives collide—uptown Lily and downtown Hank, each with a quest and a role to play in the secret drama of the city’s oldest inhabitants.

For the animal people walk among us. Native Americans call them the First People, but they have never left, and they claim the city for their own.

Not only have Hank and Lily stumbled onto a secret, they’ve stumbled into a war. And in this battle for the city’s soul, nothing is quite as it appears.

Eleştirmen yorumları

“The reader does not have to be strictly a fan of either thrillers or fantasy to thoroughly enjoy this delightful tale.”

(Washington Post)

“De Lint is as engaging a stylist as Stephen King, but considerably more inventive and ambitious.”

(Globe and Mail (Toronto))

“De Lint…clearly has no equal as an urban fantasist and very few equals among fantasists as a folklorist. First-rate.”

(Booklist)

“An enthralling blend of old European and Native American mythology, seamlessly worked into a modern setting and situation. De Lint’s best so far.”

I think this is one of the most astonishing stories I've ever read or listened to. I've loved Charles de Lint for decades and this one is crazy beautiful. I love the Crow Grils, Jack Daw, Hank and the others. It's a rambling epic that gradually draws you into a world that's we all hope we can find one day. This is mythic fiction. It's beautifully read as well!

Extraordinary

I read it many years ago and when I discovered it as an Audible book I decided to see if my memory of it lived up to the original. It did. The characters, apart from the Cuckoos are all people with whom I would like to be friends and the story grips you and makes you want to know what next? If this is your first of his books it is an excellent place to start. Needless to say I recommend it

I think maybe still my favourite if his books

One of my all-time favourite books and in De Lint library. So happy it’s on Audible. Great Narration!

While there are mythological echoes, this is original and satisfying and not rehashing something else. I enjoyed this and will listen to it again.

Really good, currently my favourite de Lint book.
