New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh's new Wescott series continues as a young woman deals with her father's death and a reversal of fortune.

With her parents' marriage declared bigamous, Camille Westcott is now illegitimate and without a title. Looking to eschew the trappings of her old life, she leaves London to teach at the Bath orphanage where her newly discovered half sister lived. But even as she settles in, she must sit for a portrait commissioned by her grandmother and endure an artist who riles her every nerve. An art teacher at the orphanage that was once his home, Joel Cunningham has been hired to paint the portrait of the haughty new teacher. But as Camille poses for Joel, their mutual contempt soon turns to desire. And it is only the bond between them that will allow them to weather the rough storm that lies ahead.

A really enjoyable book. This the second one that I have 'read' on Audible, about the Westcott family. Good story and brilliant performance by Rosalyn Landor.

A really enjoyable book.

Mary Balogh's moralising can be a bit cloying when combined with Rosalind Landor's treacly voice.

Sweet but long winded

As the second book in the series it did not disappoint. The story was interesting and totally absorbing. As in the first book the narrator was superb!

An excellent form of escapism

I knew from Book 1 (Someone to Love), that I didn’t like the character of Camille Westcott - a testament to Ms Balogh’s talent - so I didn’t approach this book with favour.

I wasn’t wrong. Camille is not an endearing character, a polar opposite to Anna her half sister (& actually her own full sister Amelia? I can’t remember her name).

However, there were some interesting sub stories within this tale and some worthy characters to embrace, enjoy and extort. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by this, although it may not be among my favourites of the series, time will tell.

Pleasantly Surprised
