'ASTONISHING AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING' Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of Children of Time

From the million-copy-bestselling Claire North - one of the most original and dazzling voices in speculative fiction - comes an intergalactic tale of conspiracy, war and the fall of empires.

***Shortlisted for the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction***
***Shortlisted for the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel***

My name is Mawukana na-Vdnaze, and I am a very poor copy of myself.

In telling my story, there are certain things I should perhaps lie about. I should make myself a hero. Pretend I was not used by strangers and gods, did not leave people behind.

Here is one truth: out there in deep-space, in the pilot's chair, I died. And then, I was reborn. I became something not quite human, something that could speak to the infinite dark. And I vowed to become the scourge of the world that wronged me.

This is the story of the supernova event that burned planets and felled civilizations. This is also the story of the many lives I've lived since I died for the first time.

This is a gloriously inventive story with a protagonist as unique and compelling as Martha Wells' Murderbot or Anne Leckie's Justice of Torrens, in a first-person narrative that spans centuries and covers star systems scattered by hundreds of light years . . . In Slow Gods, North gives us a wide-ranging enthralling, resonant and cathartic fable of our own world's predicament but anchors it with individual characters, both participants and witnesses to events, that we can connect with

The story didn’t really go anywhere - there is so much scope but it’s all a bit vague.

Also, the weird gendered pronunciations really got on my wick!

Slightly Disappointing

Very reminiscent of other books and it just went nowhere interesting. I gave up, which is unusual for me.

Nothing wrong, just long winded and it lost my attention

This is much more like what I love Claire for. She takes a normal story and adds the one extra twist and drives the story from there. Interestingly she takes on the genre of space opera. Done from a personal point of view and one that rather special.

Maw is a wonderful character. He is able to touch the heart of being alive while being on the edge of it all as well. The pathos and ethos injected into the story is lovely as usual. However for me, I still want that reduced a bit more. The obvious philosophy and culture of good and bad is often presented a bit too forcefully. Not that this is a bad thing, Like Paulo Bacigalupi the subject matter is very important and so we do need to have books on the subjects.

For me, the message of how we retain our culture and the things we do in life as time goes on, created a thought about AI training. Are we not all training future generations with the things we do, the art, the loves, the ideas and ways we do things.
We give ourselves to a wider populus. This is in s strange way the same as the AI training, if we want to live on then we do need to seed the data sets with our works. That said I still feel the companies doing the training are wrong to steal and should only take what is agreed on.

Claire has this stage in most of her stories that I like to call, ‘time in the dessert’. This is normally a part of the book that is the drudgery of the character, but she will spend too many pages on it. Keep it short like the bible does with Jesus.
The living space craft and other scenes made me think of the graphic novel series Saga. If Claire has not already read them, she needs to.

Peter Kenny’s ability to convey the authors tone is amazing. Another top performance from him.

This is a great read.

The narrator appears to be hacking up on every word that begins with an H..... It's driving me flipping bonkers.... I'm going to have to exchange this back. I just can't listen to it any more.

What on earth is going on with H words

Loved the story and the world building. But the main character was so refreshing. over powered but also weak. A passenger more than a maverick. Brilliant.

Great book and main character
