A Divorced Woman. A Dangerous Man. A Devastating Affair.

‘You’re right. It is totally extraordinary. My life is like a film; you couldn’t make it up … But there’s something I have to tell you,’ he confided, as he leaned across the table towards me. ‘I’m not normal.’

Carolyn Woods was living happily in a quiet Cotswolds village when an attractive stranger abruptly arrived in her life.

Introducing himself as Mark Conway, he exuded confidence and to her surprise Carolyn quickly became captivated by this mysterious man. A rich Swiss banker (who later confessed to being a spy), he offered Carolyn companionship and introduced her to an exciting, glamorous world.

In fact, some things were so astonishing she began to question her new lover. Was all as it seemed?

The truth was even harder to believe. For a start, his real name was Mark Acklom, he was wanted by Interpol, and he was rich but for one reason only…

A true-crime story that reads like a thriller, Sleeping with a Psychopath is a blow-by-blow account of the power of manipulation and a testament to the human will to survive.

I was familiar with this story from the press and also the documentary. It is a truly awful series of events and I am sure like most people reading it I was shouting NOOOOO at the author. It is easy to see from the outside the flaws in stories Carolyn is being told but caught in the middle of it I imagine it is easy to be manipulated by a psychopath. Carolyn tells her story with honesty and bravery I have seen her interviewed on TV and she is an intelligent and charming woman who had the most dreadful experience. The only issue I have is with the narrator her voice really grates and actually portrays Carolyn as very different to how she comes across in person. I wish someone different had been chosen as I think this would have really enhanced the experience of this book.

.it's easy to empathise with the lady. I truly hope she makes a lot of money to buy her own place

Really a good read because it's a true story

Oh my lord. She wasn’t in love with this man. She was in love with a fairytale that he gave to her. Dreaming about having a James Bond of her own. Absolutely pathetic. And I don’t know about not being greedy. Harassing over £35? He didn’t ask to top it up for him. She could simply just not sold the coat, but she offered to add the money and then kept asking for it back. I’m not rich, but I would just leave it, c’mon. Probably I would consider it as a red flag though.
He didn’t steal from her, she gave all the money to him! In her free will! I’m surprised someone has actually started an investigation on it at all.
A man was a hustler surely, but no one will protect you from people like this but yourself. You call it a victim, I call it a fool.

Interesting, however a bit annoying

I could not stop listening. Fabulously told and with such grace and honesty. Well done Carolyn.

100% Brilliant!

This was a truly amazing account of an unbelievable situation

The story is well written and the narrator when just reading is fine. However when she starts on the dialogue it’s is comically unbearable.

I stuck with it because the overall story was worth it. It just would have been so much better had it been performed by a difference narrator

Don’t let the awful narrator put you off
