It all began as a routine port-of-call at a friendly alien planet....

Ensign Carol Hansen is six months out of Fleet University, and six months out of a toxic relationship that made no sense to anyone but her. Serving aboard Liberty is everything she had aspired to. But that sweet time comes to an abrupt, violent end when Liberty is destroyed in an unexpected attack. Carol is lucky enough to be "ashore" in the alien city below, and barely survives the death raining down from space.

Can she overcome the shock and grief of loss and meet the challenge of combat leadership? Is she ready to transform herself from raw ensign to battle-tested warrior? Can she likewise face up to that failed relationship, and perhaps see with more seasoned new eyes someone who had always been right beside her?

David Powell, his dreams of a Fleet commission crushed by a family tragedy, is pulled into the same unforeseen conflict. He must now find his way back to his true future. And, somehow, to the woman he fell for that first day of freshman year.

Caught at the sudden and violent collision of three cultures, they find themselves inexorably drawn into Earth's first interstellar war, a war for which no one is fully prepared.

Slow burn puzzles with people you wish you could talk to all working on the problems! Narrator is very clear and makes it easy to tell who is talking

What is the point of doing a series but only recording two books. I’ve read the first unfortunately and wanted to get the rest of the series. Books 3-5 not available! So very frustrating.

Why only two books available???

The space battles are tense, the emotional stakes are high. A nice mix of action and depth for fans of thoughtful sci-fi. There is one place where the book seems to have skipped a scene, and it took me a moment to understand.

Having read the series four times and thoroughly enjoyed every read I was dubious about an audible version. I have never listened to an audio book, much preferring to use my own thoughts and imagination to bring characters to life. Well more fool me! Jeanie has more than surpassed my expectations. Her ingenious interpretation of each character brings them to life allowing my own imagination to flourish and wander into other areas within the plot. It is just how this book should be read and has upped my enjoyment to another level. Well done all and I look forward to another relaxing day or two over the next audio. Now that I have experience audio books perhaps I should try wine on introvenus drip 🤔

It just gets better!

With crises mounting, many young officers must evolve from novices to resilient leaders amidst the chaos of war. The novel adeptly balances intense action sequences with deep character development. Narrator does well with characters from around the world.
