NOW THE NO.1 DRAMA IN THE HISTORY OF APPLE TV+

The much anticipated prequel to bestseller Wool that takes us back to the beginnings of the silo.

In a future less than fifty years away, the world is still as we know it. Time continues to tick by. The truth is that it is ticking away.

A powerful few know what lies ahead. They are preparing for it. They are trying to protect us.

They are setting us on a path from which we can never return.

A path that will lead to destruction; a path that will take us below ground.

The history of the silo is about to be written.

Our future is about to begin.

Would you listen to Shift again? Why?

I would - gives a greater insight into how "Wool" came to be.

What didn’t you like about Peter Brooke’s performance?

Didn't seem to get inside the characters to the same degree Susannah Harker did.

Great but shame Susannah Harker wasn't narrating

Loved book 1, so started this one immediately but took several attempts to get into it due to the jarring change in narrator.

Eventually I got used to him enough to continue - and for story/character reasons it does make a kind of sense to have someone with a US accent do the middle book. However, every time he did yet another stupid voice for a character it lifted me right out of the story. Super frustrating.

The worst was towards the end, where we encounter someone who was important in the second half of book 1. This narrator gave this guy a voice that made him sound like a whiny teenager - in book 1 this character was a thoughtful adult man so this in particular was pretty annoying.

BUT...if you can get past the narrator and the occasional less-engaging section (personally I was bored by Mission's bits - I see the purpose of that storyline but I'd have chosen to visit it less often), this is a pretty good follow-up to Wool, and sets the stage well for the final book, with some mysteries resolved and - I suspect - several more to be uncovered!

The premise, the plot and the twists are what drive these books. I don't find myself at all sympathetic towards many of the characters, including the central ones, but I actually think that works here - one of the many deeper ideas you could extract from this series is that humans are complex, messy, can have multiple motives, and can take a course of action (or inaction) that might be right, wrong or just... be. I don't necessarily think we need to feel close to our protagonists to recognise a fine story - particularly one where we are zooming in and out over several generations. Asimov's Foundation books are a classic example of this.

Would I compare Howey to Asimov in a wider sense? Maybe! The ingredients are there. I look forward to listening to the denouement in book 3 (and to the return of the much more listenable book 1 narrator - phew!)

Enjoyed the story but struggled with the narrator

After the amazing Wool... I couldn't wait to start this one and it's good but not great that said it did add to what I already knew from Wool and expand on it enough to set me up for Dust. It could however have been 50% shorter and still fulfilled it's purpose as a bridge/filler book.

Narration well...oh dear.... I can understand the need or desire for a different narrator it's a prequel after all.

Narration is adequate for the story parts... but Peter Brooke really should have been made to listen to Susannah Harker's reading of Wool because where he fails miserably is in characterization.... his voices are appalling (most sound like old women done badly by a man) and he literally murders the Lucas Harker built up so well in Wool.

Not great but necessary

I really liked Wool and found Shift a great follow on. Although it took some getting used to a different narrator to Wool, I did eventually take to it. I also found the lead initially too weak for my liking but, again, he did grow on me as the story progressed.
May questions answered, and many more unanswered. So I can't wait for the next part!

Excellent Sequel to Wool

You won't be disappointed with this prequel!! Howey has maintained his excellent pacing and ability to keep you hooked and guessing right until the end.
