Özet

Audie Award Finalist, Teens, 2014

Rose Justice is a young pilot with the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War. On her way back from a semi-secret flight in the waning days of the war, Rose is captured by the Germans and ends up in Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi women's concentration camp. There, she meets an unforgettable group of women, including a once glamorous and celebrated French detective novelist whose Jewish husband and three young sons have been killed; a resilient young girl who was a human guinea pig for Nazi doctors trying to learn how to treat German war wounds; and a Nachthexen, or Night Witch, a female fighter pilot and military ace for the Soviet air force.

These damaged women must bond together to help each other survive. In this companion volume to the critically acclaimed novel Code Name Verity, Elizabeth Wein continues to explore themes of friendship and loyalty, right and wrong, and unwavering bravery in the face of indescribable evil.

this book is like getting two or even three stories at once.
we get to hear what happened to Maddie after "Codename Verity", we read about the exciting life of Rose Justice transport pilot, and then..... then another story begins.
it manages to distill the horrors of a hazy camp without the gory/sensational details.
through the story and through Rose's eyes and memories you experience it all without realizing that this is those horrible things history told us.
it was very difficult for me, and yet I couldn't stop listening.

captivating and so so important

I absolutely loved "Codename Verity" so I was a little apprehensive as to whether this novel could live up to it and, in the beginning, I did think it was very slow moving. Stick with it. The second part is equally as compelling as Verity (if not more) and the graphic descriptions of the conditions at Ravensbruck utterly heartrbreaking. I do like the clever way that Wein helps us understand the villains as well as the heroines and I do love a book full of very brave girls. I absolutely loved it!

A slow burner which really takes off

Just incredible. READ IT. LISTEN IT TO. YOU WILL NOT REGRET. (Make sure it's too the very end though)

I loved this book. It gave a real insight into life in Ravensbrück and the strength of the women who were there. The narrator was fantastic. Highly recommended!
