'Characters you'll come to love and a story that keeps you turning the page.' Rosie Goodwin

The fourth book in a dramatic and moving World War II saga series of family, secrets and lies. Perfect for readers of Ellie Dean and Annie Groves and for fans of the Home Fires series.

All is not well at Castle's Café. Since the fatal shooting, customers have been staying away, and now Nellie finds herself in debt to the sinister Terence Carter. But when a deadly attack strikes close to home, these troubles pale into insignificance.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Castle's relationship with family friend Reenie Turner has deepened, and in the aftermath of the attack that could so easily have killed them, they decide to get married.

But the return of an old friend threatens to expose a long-held secret, leaving the wedding teetering on the brink of disaster . . . 20th Century Family Life Genre Fiction Historical Historical Fiction

Cannot wait for the next installments! The characters are so real and human, you can't help but care for them all.The historical context of Dover in WWII has me intrigued, I was blissfully ignorant when I went to school there in the late 70s. I also appreciate that the author has included many topics that are still very relevant today, if not more so eg homophobia, PTSD, child refugees in boats crossing the channel...
Great family drama with plenty of humour to lighten the suspense - I could not stop listening and the brilliant narrater, Bea Holland must take some of the credit.

So hooked!!!

As always excellent stories provided by the ongoing saga of the Casle's dealing with war time adversity in bomb alley and hells corner told right properly in such dramatic form that you feel like you are tight there in the room with em all. It's like having a ringside seat in the circus that is the Castle Cafe. The only small criticism I would make is that because there is a longish pause between books/episodes, a little bit of a reprise of the story so far and a reminder biography of all the characters would be helpful at the start of this and future episodes would be appreciated by the listener/reader. Otherwise its bloody brilliant and can't wait for the next instalment.

I do like this series and the history of the war years is very interesting

I've been listening to all of these books and I've had to write all the characters down so I could remember who's who.
