A soldier and a pacifist make the unlikeliest of pairs, but when passion sparks, there’s nothing that can prevent their love from igniting.

Winifred Cunningham, the adopted daughter of a portrait painter, hopes that her new close friend, Owen Ware, will soon ask for her hand in marriage. But when Owen introduces Winifred to his elder brother Nicholas, the late Earl of Stratton’s second son, the slow burn between them begins.

Nicholas is a cavalry colonel—a hardened soldier whom Winifred at first despises. She finds him intimidating and cruel-looking, while he finds her strange and startlingly forthright. During a summer at Ravenswood, however, Nicholas and Winifred are unwillingly thrown together on several occasions, until they realize the passion that drives their disagreements is not due to dislike—it is because of attraction.

Winifred still awaits Owen’s proposal, and Nicholas has made his intention to marry his commanding officer’s daughter quite clear. With allegiances to other marriage prospects and brotherly bonds at risk, not to mention the age difference between them, Nicholas and Winifred know it would be wholly improper to pursue a romance....

And yet, romance is irresistible. Perhaps even inevitable.

brilliant storyline from start to finish with some great characters and antics within the book. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.

outstanding performance by Rosalyn Landor pure class.
I'm so pleased Mary Ballogh used Rosalyn to narrate again. it wouldn't be the same listening to the new book in the collection.
Loved the story and new characters. can't wait for the next in the series. Don't make us wait too long Mary. You have a few more books and stories to be told before the series ends!?

Narrator Rosalyn Landor is in a different class. everything she does brings the story, the people to life

I liked Winifrid befoe; but couldn't believe the "stupidest comment" that left her mouth. Calling all Soldiers "Killers"; claiming she finds all violence abhorrent. This is such a ridiculous, childish and unbelievable start to "any relationship" with a career soilder. Why would he pay her futher attention? Later Stephanie joins in with a "random and stupid attack" at the man she fancies. The rest of the story is based on repeats of all the previous books. Introducing all the previous characters in detail. The Heroine "angst" over the fact she was left on the "doorstep in a basket," and has no knowledge of her parents. The Hero "angst" over the fact he is "TOO OLD" for her. That he is committed to another woman and after his father's betrayal, he has turned his back on love. Thankfully, though tedious, the other characters carry the story. I have found this series full of remorse, reminiscent and tedious repeats. As usual all wrongs are forgiven and everyone lives happily ever after.

It was great to have an update on some of the Wescott family members included in this Ravenswood story. Enjoyable book as always from Mary Balogh & the narration by Rosalyn Landor was the icing on the cake. Looking forward to the next instalment in the series.

Waited with bated breath for this installment and was a bit let down. The storyline was so similar to Devlin and Gwyneth's story, also to much repetition of info...great narration.

We need to get an ending for Steph and Bertrand, just saying😕
