Can two outcasts find refuge in one another's hearts? Dr. Vance Phelps lost everything in the War Between the States - her career and her faith in herself. Mae is a frontier madam, used to standing and fighting alone. She guards the well-being of the lost young women who come under her care - she just never expected one of them to be a doctor. A bold story of redemption amidst the wild landscape of the heart, where lost promises find new hope.

Firstly I will say it did take me quite a while to get into the story as I wasn’t fully invested in the story from the start, which is unusual for me as I usually am invested straight away. But once I got into the story and the characters I really enjoyed it.

There are two individual couples in this book (Mae and Vance) & (Kate and Jessie). Mae and Kate are both femmes. Vance and Jessie are both butch. I thought both couples had great chemistry, and I loved Mae and Kate’s friendship.

The story was back in time and I liked it was western, which was different.

The narration made this book for me, Lori Prince did a great job at the different voices.

Beautifully written, richly detailed prose full of well-drawn and utterly unbelievable characters that are capable of provoking the most extreme of emotions in the listener. The narrator read fantastically well and managed to add something to the story rather than detract from it (as is so often the case). Radclyffe always does a 'proper job', and has yet to disappoint in all the years I've been reading/listening. One thing though, I've pondered my own 'alleyway' scene with Hanrahan that I find much more satisfying...

A proper indulgence

This is a fantastic beautiful emotional conclusion to life in the wild west.
A new Dr in town brings new beginnings, and finds a new home.
She also finds love in unexpected places.
Excellent narration. 🎶

I loved the first book, and this is as good.
losing an arm at the end of the civil war, troubled with guilt and ptsd, Dr vance heads to Montana, to assist in the local Dr's practise. mae is the defacto carer of the girls in the saloon, and intrigued by vance in thier first meeting.
jess and kate continue thier story, and the 4 women all become firm friends.
the hostile west brings reality to vance, as she deals with gunshot wounds, and the pig ignorant arrogance of most men.
fantastic writing brought to life with great narration.
