We are all people-pleasers in one way or another – even those who deny it.
Whether at work, home or in our relationships, we all know how it feels to want people to like us. The problem comes when we give up our own needs along the way.
In this life-changing book, psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell explains the different ‘types’ of people-pleaser and provides practical, reassuring advice on how to better understand – and stop – people-pleasing behaviour when it starts to affect your own needs.
Please Yourself will help you care for others in the right way – and ultimately, help you take better care of yourself.

Emma is a superb author and has a really comforting speaking style / tone, which makes this book feel much more like thoughtful coaching rather than an instructional self help title. To her credit also, it's not packed full of fluffy repetition or padding like so many of these titles can be - it's well structured and I hung on every chapter gladly. It's given me a lot to reflect on.
The most surprising realisation for me is that my people-pleasing side is unintentionally manipulative and can actually do far more harm than good - not just to myself, but to those I care about. I really can see that now.
I'm genuinely trying to migrate the learning into daily life - I have a busy job (which I make more difficult for myself) and the most amazing other half. I've been working on being more decisive in both of these worlds; dithering less, making decisions, and not burdening everyone else with choosing the "right answer". I'm also working on not taking on everything I'm asked to do, only to then deliver poorly because I took on too much again. There's a balance to be had, but I'm intrigued and excited by the possibility of positive change to come from putting this into practise.
Thank you, Emma.
