In the vein of Running with Scissors, Playground is the glitzy, glamorous, and surreal true story of a young girl who grew up inside the Playboy Mansion and never learned where the party stopped and the real world began.

You are six years old. Every day after school your father takes you to a sprawling castle filled with exotic animals, bowls of candy, and half-naked women catering to your every need.

You have your own room. You have new friends. You have an uncle Hef who's always there for you.

Welcome to the world of Playground, the true story Jennifer Saginor who grew up inside the Playboy Mansion. By the time she was fourteen, she'd done countless drugs, had a secret affair with Hef's girlfriend, and was already losing her grip on reality. Schoolwork, family, and "ordinary people" had no meaning behind the iron gates of the Mansion, where celebrities frolicked, pool parties abounded, and her own father—Hugh Hefner's personal physician and best friend, the man nicknamed "Dr. Feel Good"—typically held court.

Every day was a party, every night was an adventure, and through it all was a young girl falling faster and faster down the rabbit hole—trying desperately hard not to get lost.

"Totally surreal. This is one of those books you simply can’t put down."—Ben Affleck

“Utterly compelling….It’s one helluva book!”—Larry King

I’ve given this 3 stars because I’ve definitely enjoyed better written autobiographies but I also know this story will haunt me for years to come. I actually started having bad dreams after reading this. It’s a lesson in bad parenting, the author is hard to like in places because she is a name dropping label loving spoilt brat but you can also forgive her because how could anyone with a childhood that messed up be expected to turn out as a well rounded individual. It’s a shocking look into the dark world of Playboy during the 80’s that I won’t forget in a hurry.

This is a deep dive into the life of a poor little rich girl. Shocking at times

This was an addictive listen, albeit very uncomfortable at parts, especially when it came to the descriptions of the author being groomed as a teenager by an adult.

The author seems to have internalised the misogyny shown by Hugh Hefner and her father and it's very clear in the language used about other women.

I finished this audiobook not really understanding if the author understands the abuse she underwent, the grooming by so many she trusted, and her dynamic with her father was sickening. It sounded like she'd normalised truly awful behaviour e.g. his fetishism for teens, his disrespect for women, the fact that he was a total loser and that he was proud of how he'd provided for her when it's clear everything he did was to benefit herself.

I hope for the author's sake I've missed something as she deserved, and deserves better.

A troubling tale of internalised misogyny

This was a really interesting book to listen to. Although her revollections of her affair with Hugh Hefner's girlriend were very graphic and designed to titillate rather than enhance the story. It really is a story of too much, too young, a warped childhood. I hope Jennifer has gone on to have a happy life and be able to appreciate the ordinary things in life.

As a listener of Playground by Jennifer Savginor, I found myself struggling to engage with both the narrative and the delivery. The monotony of the voice narration, evident from the outset, set a tone that persisted throughout the book, making it a challenge to stay immersed in the story.

The storyline itself felt disjointed, lacking a clear thread to tie together its various elements. Instead of a cohesive narrative, the plot meandered aimlessly, leaving me feeling disconnected and disinterested in the characters' fates.

One of the most troubling aspects of Playground was its excessive and gratuitous use of profanity, particularly the derogatory terms directed towards women. This not only detracted from the overall experience but also lent an air of immaturity to the writing style, making it difficult to take the story seriously.

In summary, Playground by Jennifer Savginor left much to be desired. With its monotonous narration, disjointed storyline, and juvenile language, it failed to deliver a compelling or enjoyable listening experience. I would caution potential listeners to sample the preview before committing to this audiobook, as it may not be to everyone's taste.
