The first four series of the original BBC Radio 4 fantastical drama series set in a world almost, but not quite, like our own.

Paul Hilton stars as William Palmer, the immortal, reluctant and unthanked hero protecting mankind from an enemy they resist believing in: the Grey Folk.

Thrilling, dark and contemporary, the dramas are set in a recognisable present day but one haunted by the folktales of the British Isles: drowned villages, changeling children, werewolves and unruly nature spirits.

Really compelling drama, not at all in my usual line - but the the stories mix folklore and the modern world in such an extraordinary and convincing way. Main actor Paul Hilton is entirely convincing, and all of the voices are are well chosen for their characterization. I think this has been well directed to get the best out of an excellent cast, and it is a fine example of a script which lends itself far better to audio drama than it woukd to film, as it allows the listener's imagination to populate the space.

Weird and wonderful

Love pilgrim, one of the best BBC radio dramas out there and Paul Hilton is the only person who could play the part. absolutely brilliant.

The best

I really think Mr Basckiewicz has a gift for weaving stories that feel at once extremely grounded in the real world and yet are otherworldly. Pilgrim really shows his craft here and the voice performances are excellent throughout, I greatly recommend this dive into the world of English folklore.

A very strong, unique production

Where does Pilgrim: The Collected Series 1-4 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pilgrim ranks very highly in the audiobook I have listened too especially in this type of genre.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is very dark in places with lots of weird characters, and places, He has been around for hundreds of years because he bumped into the fairy king and did not believe that the kings realm was real, so he was cursed never being able to die

Which character – as performed by Paul Hilton – was your favourite?

Pilgrim is my favourite character by far he is loved by the fairy king which is odd as he has been cursed by him. I also like the king even though you never hear from him but his wants are pasted through his followers,he is a mean and untrustworthy person.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thought the chapter where Hext was dead and did not know he was dead and was in something like a waiting room for the dead meeting people he knew from his childhood

Any additional comments?

I found these books completely by chance and just can't stop listening to it, the stories link into each other. Pilgrim seems to of helped many of the grey folk people in the past which tends to leave them owing Pilgrim a favour which he uses to help the humans he finds in trouble while walking, he seems very rich and uses the wealth to set up trusts to help people evade the king from finding them.

Great listening
