Book one in the Bequin series.
Listen to it because:
It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.
The story:
In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

If I were to have one criticism it would be with the narration, the decision to go with a female narrator over Abnett regular Toby Longworth is a valid one. However, I found Helen Keeley's tone off in places, and sadly like a number of other narrators chosen for 40K novels she feels the need to slip into a cod American accent which simply isn't needed. Her pronunciation of the word feotid really irritated me - something that editing should have picked up.
Small narration issues aside it's a great book, and its appearance on audio has been a long time coming. Penitent is out now too, so all we can hope is that there isn't another 9 year wait for the follow up.
Abnett at his best

I love the pace, the characters, the mystery and the story. No clear cut good side and so many unknows but presented in a good manner, you do not feel overwhelmed.
Cannot wait to start the next book in the series!
It got me hooked!
