Aristotle Onassis was a born orator, and Jackie Kennedy would sit and listen to him spin off tales and stories - often racy - by the hour. A speaker of seven languages, he could keep a dinner party of some of the world's most sophisticated conversationalists spellbound. Even Jackie couldn't help but drop her reserve and laugh with him. America's First Lady simply never knew anyone quite as free or exotic as Aristotle Onassis, a paradoxical blend of raconteur and ruffian.

Beginning with Aristotle Onassis' childhood and his first financial success as an Argentine tobacco dealer, author Frank Brady gives the listener an intimate account of Onassis' rise to the ranks of super-billionaire. Brady captures all the drama and romance of this glamorous tycoon, peeling away the persona to reveal the husband, lover, father, financial wiz, and companion to the Churchills, Kennedys, and Roosevelts.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Onassis' life certainly was extraordinary and extravagant. At times you feel like you are listening to a Hollywood Movie being played out. I enjoyed the narration. I felt transported to the time period. I could feel the gentle bobbing on the waves and hear the hum of the engines of the yachts and ships Onassis owned and smell the cigar smoke and debauchery amongst the sound of roaring laughter and champagne bottles being opened in the Parisian restaurants he often dined at. A very interesting story about Greece's most famous character since Hercules and Zeus. At times Onassis compares more to a demi-god than a mere mortal.

What a life.

Aristotle Onassis was the most famous businessman in the world in his day. His extravagant life aboard his luxury yacht and his private island awed and inspired millions. In the mid-late 70s Onassis was the subject of at least four bestselling roman à clef type novels and a major movie "The Greek Tycoon" but this book purports to tell the real truthーand what a read it is!
My one criticism is that the end (packed with Maria Callas, divorce, his son's death and Jackie O) is far more fascinating than the beginning and yet it seems to be over with far too quickly. The beginning tells all kinds of facts about millions of Greeks in Turkey in the early 20th century that I didn't even know about. (I knew Greece hated Turkey, but wasn't 100% sure why.)
A great life story. I just wish there could be more details at the end!

What a story! What a life!
