Jane Austen skewers the novelistic extremes of her day made popular in many 18th-century Gothic potboilers. Dilapidated castles, locked rooms, inexplicable chests, enigmatic notes, and tyrannical fathers all figure into Northanger Abbey, but with a decidedly sardonic twist.Public Domain (P)2009 Audio Holdings, LLC Classics Coming of Age Genre Fiction Historical Historical Fiction Literary Fiction Literature & Fiction Multicultural Regency Romantic Comedy Satire Esprili

Editör yorumları

Catherine Morland is, "in training to be a heroine", and can't get her fill of the popular gothic novels that are available to her in 18th-century England. But when she lets her imagination get carried away, she may risk losing the one she loves. In Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen's gentle parody of 18th-century gothic novels, Actress Joanna Lumley, best known in the U.S. for her work on Absolutely Fabulous adds subtle humor and great grace to a classic story. Listeners will be entranced with Austen's intricate descriptions of a social system beyond their fathoming, where choice of a partner is an all-consuming task, and where ghosts or madness lurk around the corners of great estates and castles.

Northanger Abbey is my second favourite Jane Austen novel (after Pride and Prejudice). Although it does not particularly need to be abridged, I am not opposed to abridged versions in general. What I love most about this version is Joanna's beautiful narration. If she were to narrate unabridged versions of every Austen novel, I would want to buy them all.

Wonderful performance
