Theo Jennings is a young auctioneer at the Thoroughbred sales ring in Newmarket. The October yearling sales are where the big money exchanges hands in frenzied auctions – millions of Guineas paid for horses that are as yet unnamed, untested and have never taken a step on the track. It's the greatest gamble in all of horseracing, and one that can end in ruin.

Theo has just made the biggest sale of his life when he overhears a secret conversation between the two bidders – can they really have colluded to fix the price of his big sale? When that same horse is found dead the next morning, he has no choice but to investigate, even against the wishes of his boss. But the more he uncovers, the less he can trust the people around him.

The higher the stakes, the greater the risk. And in the bloodstock game, the ultimate price can be murder...

The
story maintains Felix Francis' well crafted stories. A good story line with suspense and pace.
Spoiler:
if I have one ongoing gripe it is the inaccuracy of the the medical event in the stories. In this one we have Theo experiencing a "dislocated ankle", requiring reduction, only to be told that there is no ligamentous injury. Having personally reduced a few ankles myself this is not possible, and the cast does not come off the same night. Recovery is 3-6 months and patients can complain of symptoms for a year or more.

Excellent narration that fitted the story so well.

Character, very weak I’m sure when his girlfriend gave him the information he then wouldn’t turn around to his boss and tell him who it was so I find the whole people involved in this WOKE

Good story

I have been a fan of Dick Francis and the books written with Felix Francis for many years and have read all of their books. This is the first time I have consumed one as an audio book. While I have nothing against Martin Amis as an actor or narrator, I feel that as the main character in this book was a man in his 30’s, having a man in his 80’s voice the part was a mistake and made the character seem much older and not believable. I also could not fathom the inclusion in the plot of the Soham murders, I feel that it did not add anything to the story, in fact I found it a little ridiculous. I also felt it was in bad taste. Unfortunately not one of my favourites

Not bad but not great
