Robert Silverberg's enduring classic about one man's journey to find salvation for a planet on the brink of destruction.

"Roum is a city built on seven hills. They say it was a capital of man in one of the earlier cycles. I knew nothing of that, for my guild was Watching, not Remembering."

For 1,000 years, mankind has lived under the threat of invasion from an alien race. After the oceans rose and the continents were reshaped, people divided into guilds - Musicians, Scribes, Merchants, Clowns, and more. The Watchers wander the Earth, scouring the skies for signs of enemies from the stars. But during one Watcher's journey to the ancient city of Roum with his companion, a Flier named Avluela, a moment of distraction allows the invaders to advance. When the Watcher finally sounds the alarm, it's too late: the star people are poised to conquer all.

And so with the world in turmoil, the Watcher sets outalone for the Hall of the Rememberers, keepers of the past, where humanity's last hope for survival might be hidden.

Nightwings a whole new world. A world of the guilds. A world in which you can be a watcher, rememberer, pilgrim, redemer and nightwing. A world in which youth is restored.

Great SF with brilliant narrator. Will listen to more from narrator and writer. More than the title suggests

I found the story pretty good all things together, there was one huge info dump that annoyed me a bit and dragged on for a bit too long, but the voice actor told the story wonderfully.
There is a lack of a “plot” it’s a guy going to places, taking up jobs, moving along as the world changed around him, if the world wasn’t as unique as it was it would have been boring.
My biggest complaint (minor spoilers) is the “change of status” between a parent - daughter relationship to a romantic one, it didn’t matter to me if he was “young again” it still rubbed me the wrong way.
Overall hey, it’s free, why not give it a shot?

Good, but got a bit creepy towards the end.

I have read this book so often over the years, my copy has fallen to bits now and was delighted to find it in included in the Plus Catalogue. When Audible remove it I will actually buy it from them.

If you like Fantasy crossed with soft sci-fi then then try the book out while it is still in the Plus Catalogue (essentially free!).

Absolute Classic

I know that this was originally a trilogy of novellas that got stitched together into a novel; the story does have different stages, but it does still feel like one story, so I'd say this was done well.

I usually love Stefan Rudnicki's narration, but I must say he doesn't do female voices well. This isn't too much of an issue here, and he does do the general narration and the protagonist well.

Decent story
