Roald Dahl had an abiding love for and interest in nature. He kept notes about the habits of moles and foxes, the colour and song of birds and the different flowers, plants and berries that blossomed in the countryside around his home, Gipsy House, throughout the year.

In the last year of his life he worked on a diary. But what was originally intended to be a few lines turned into a memorable account of the passing year. Reminiscences of childhood and adolescene, combined with tips about how to rid your lawn of moles or attract birds to your garden, are interwoven with observations about the changing seasons and the festivals we celebrate.

I have always loved Roald Dahl’s writing. Although a short book it is full of fascinating facts and his enthusiasm for the world around us is a wonderful inspiration, particularly in this age where we have so much and yet never seem to be satisfied.

I loved this

A great reading by Ian Holm, who does full justice to this simply-told and compassionate "Tale of the Four Seasons."

I think I, like many people have always had a love for Dahls writing. This is like the cherry on the cake; A glimpse into the last year of his life, just as he sees it. it's a real feel good listen, short (I wish it was about 10x longer, such a fascinating man.) but full of gems. His love of nature shines through each month, and we get to enjoy smatterings of life stories too. I particularly liked his unedited views of people who don't respect wildlife and his views on how the world has/is changing. There's a particularly humorous story in December that I think will stay with me forever. An excellent read for anyone in my opinion, if you think this is for you,it is, don't hesitate to listen to this, you won't be dissapointed. I will definitely listen to this time and time again.

An amazing man and human.
