BACK TO SCHOOL

A letter for Rudeus arrives out of the blue, bearing an invitation to enroll at the Ranoa University of Magic. The admissions exam is a cakewalk, but once Rudeus is accepted, a far less straightforward challenge awaits him—getting to know his eccentric new classmates!

This is a good volume, but it definitely is the weakest so far due to its place in the story. This continues from the previous entry, but a lot of it is laying more groundwork and setting up things that will be resolved in the spectacular volume 9. As a standalone volume, this one feels the most incomplete. But that doesn't mean it is bad by any means. The character writing is still spectacular as always, and the worldbuilding and new setting are great!

Sylphie is finally a key character again, and every one of her internal monologues and side stories is extremely sweet. It is really nice to see the lasting effect he had on her, and it makes for an interesting story: the broken man with no self-confidence and trust issues has unknowingly had someone in his corner all these years, waiting for him and thinking about him.

The highlight of this volume, however, is something we have seen a few times now, and that is just how strongly Rudeus is against bullying; they really nail the point of how seriously he takes this social issue.

Zanoba’s reintroduction was also hilarious, and it was nice to have familiar faces return, as well as be introduced to multiple new ones, all of whom are also pretty unique and memorable.

A good 'in-between' volume
