Özet

Trading in Texas heat for Maine's tangy salt air, Natalie Barnes risked it all to buy the Gray Whale Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast on Cranberry Island. She adores whipping up buttery muffins and other rich breakfast treats for her guests until Bernard Katz checks in. The overbearing land developer plans to build a resort next door where an endangered colony of black-chinned terns is nesting. Worried about the birds, the inevitable transformation of the sleepy fishing community, and her livelihood, Natalie takes a public stand against the project. But the town board sides with Katz. Just when it seems like things can't get any worse, Natalie finds Katz dead. Now the police and much of the town think she's guilty. Can Natalie track down the true killer before she's hauled off to jail...or becomes the next victim?

This story would be SO much better if it wasn't weighed down by a colossal number of adjectives - I doubt there's a single noun that escapes without one, two, even three of them! They slow the pace and interrupt the building of tension. We really don't need to be told that John has green eyes EVERY time he makes an appearance - three times within a few sentences in one case. It's as if the book hasn't been seen by an editor. Another huge problem is that the main character's eyes and mind appear to operate independently, eg 'my eyes rolling over the green landscape', 'My eyes crept to the edge of the cliff', 'My eyes leapt to his hands', 'My eyes skittered around the room' etc. This would be hilarious! It's her gaze, glance, stare etc that engages, not her eyeballs. Similarly, instead of simply saying, 'I turned it over in my mind', it's 'my mind turned it over'. There are many ways of constructing a sentence without making these fundamental mistakes. I hope that her next book goes through a thorough editing process before it appears in public. And the narration is stilted, as if the narrator stops at the end of each line before continuing the sentence. For me, there are too many 'cookies' etc. The premise clearly needs some domestic details but surely not quite so many? Overall, as I say, the story would be fine if it wasn't bogged down quite so much by extraneous (and boring) detail. I hope this helps.

There's a decent story somewhere in here...
