Coles's feline wit and infectious enthusiasm for ecclesiastical trivia make for a very moreish read. (Jake Kerridge)
Written in Coles's customary wry style which owes much to the work of Alan Bennett. (Geoffrey Wansell)
Richard writes beautifully... a delightful piece of detective work set in a religious order. The atmosphere is so intense, you can almost smell the incense on the page. (Ryan Tubridy)
A village that could rival Agatha Christie's St Mary Mead and the TV murder hotspot of Midsomer for its ever growing body count

I was disappointed with this one. Bit too emotional and too personal. Interesting references to the monastery but a bit tiresome.

Not as good as the others

Loved the previous book so I snapped up this one. Fantastic characters, great story with a unique liturgical element. Read beautifully by the author who manages to separate the characters voices seamlessly. The central relationships are brilliantly observed and touching, and the dialogue of the protagonist’s mother is hilarious and so so clever. I’m guessing she’s based on the author’s own late mother who had a sharp, acerbic wit. This is a great book. Cannot wait for the next one.

Another corker

I find this story so compelling even though I have no interest in COE ministry or traditional.
Although I find myself enthralled with the story as a whole not just the main plot.

Love it but why?

I am loving this series and very much looking forward to the next instalment. I’m sure I’ll click on the Buy Now button before I’ve even read the blurb. I know a few of the reviewers haven’t liked all the ecclesiastical detail but - horses for courses - and I love getting immersed in it. The characters are so well observed and brought to life, but I have to say that I think Daniel is worthy of someone with more about him than Neil, who seems a bit wishy washy to me (….just saying). I really appreciate the stories being read by Richard himself - he has the most wonderful storytellers voice. He’d be brilliant on Jackanory if it was still around today. I also love their 1980s setting - which takes me back to my student days when I saw Richard at Rock City in Nottingham when he was part of the Communards. Happy days!

Wonderful Series

String of religious discussions and debates with a murder popped in about 2/3 of the way through the story. Threaded through this is the continuing story of the characters loves and lives.
