Uncover the secrets of Edward Fairfax Rochester, the beloved, enigmatic hero of Jane Eyre, as he tells his story for the first time in Mr Rochester, Sarah Shoemaker's gorgeous retelling of one of the most romantic stories in literature.

On his eighth birthday, Edward is banished from his beloved home, Thornfield Hall, to learn his place in life. With the help of friends, enemies and a series of eccentric mentors, he discovers more than he might have wished about the ways of the men - and women - who will one day be his peers.

Edward's journey takes him to the warm, languid shores of Jamaica, where he becomes entangled in the beguiling, unchecked lifestyle of the island, and with a certain enticing heiress. But the choices he makes there will haunt him desperately. It is only when he is finally able to return home, and encounters one stubborn, plain, young governess, that Edward can see any possibility of redemption - and love.

Rich and vibrant, Edward's evolution from tender-hearted child to Charlotte Bronte's passionately tormented hero will completely, deliciously, and forever change how we read and remember Jane Eyre.

A winner! Even if you never read Jane Eyre, you would still find Mr Edward Fairfax Rochester fascinating and hang on every word of his extraordinary story, told in perfect nineteenth-century language. A richly rewarding read (Margaret George, New York Times bestselling author)
With flair and heart, MR ROCHESTER tells the story that legions of Jane Eyre fans have been waiting more than a century to hear. Sarah Shoemaker's impressive debut takes readers into the mind of one of literature's most vexing and compelling romantic heroes and paints a nuanced portrait of a man torn between responsibility and passion. Prepare to be swept off your feet by Sarah Shoemaker's stunning debut, MR ROCHESTER. As one of countless readers who adored Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, but never quite understood what Jane saw in Mr Rochester, I was spellbound. Beautifully written, exquisitely crafted, and deeply engaging, MR ROCHESTER is pure book club gold (Mary Sharratt)

Listened to Jane Eyre more times than I can count. Totally love it... Tripped over this book when browsing recommendations. A little sceptical to start with but I now belive Sarah has nailed Rochester. Can totally accept that this could be his life.

Nervous start, but develops in to a great listen.

Often sequels or prequels written centuries later , do not hold to the nature of the original book. Comprehensible, as they are written by minds raised in different eras. This book is astonishing in that it really captures the essence of Jane Eyre. Very nice, very interesting twists and very entertaining. Simon Shepherd was wonderful. I am a big fan.

I loved the whole story. Jane Eyre was always a favourite book of mine and I have read it cover to cover numerous times since I was 12. But as I got older I always wondered why Mr Rochester married a mad woman! Well I love the explanation of this story and it fitted very well in style, in the words and just the atmosphere of the book.
I will re read Jane Eyre again and happy to do the same with Mr Rochester.
The narration was spot on. The story, the narration were very good. Sad that the book and the story is over.

I Love Jane Eyre, and this is just as good. Some of his thoughts is a bit New, like if he is too rough with women, but it is okay.

Best spin off ever!

Be still, my beating heart! This book is an absolute gem of a story - a retelling of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre but focussing on the life of Edward Rochester. Over two thirds of this book is dedicated to Edward’s life pre-Jane, documenting his childhood, education, travel to Jamaica and subsequent business interests. The writing is vibrant and Edward is shown to be a character with immense moral standing, quite different from the rather staid gentleman in the original. Shoemaker brings a whole new perspective to Edward’s persona and I like it, I like it a lot. This book is a winner!
