Burnt-out social worker Amalie Holmes thinks she's finally caught a lucky break in the form of a free cottage from her mystery great aunt. With nothing to lose, Amalie heads for the hills, or, in this case, the mountains. Turns out the cottage comes with a big family secret: Amalie is from a long line of witches. She quickly discovers that living in a new town isn't easy, especially when lightning strikes whenever she loses her temper!

When an orphaned 11-year-old stands accused of murder, Amalie's social worker instincts compel her to solve the case and clear the child, even if it means digging into painful secrets the town considers long buried. Secrets that paint a target on her back.

Between her crazy family, magic lessons, investigating a murder, and the sexy wizard detective hell-bent on keeping her in line, Amalie's not sure which one will be the death of her first - her newfound abilities or the killer.

Nice cozy mystery, the twisting storyline keeps your interest but the narration is as a little monotone at times.
Overall a great listen and very relaxing

If you are looking for a story with thrills spiced with a bit of horror, this book isn't for you. As you would expect for a "cozy" mystery, there's lots of character and relationship development. The mystery is gently eased into and out of. There's nothing there to alarm - no violence, no harsh emotions, no creeping menace. The pace is gentle and the performer takes the story at a leisurely speed. In addition, the "chic lit" aspect is subdued, which suits this septuagenarian. Even so, I like the plot and the story and have purchased the 2nd book in the series.

A gently paced murder mystery

Great story from start to finish. It’s told where it brings your imagination to life. Little magic and some old “Who Dunnits” to make it all easy listening.

Oh to be a witch

Loved the fact she had no idea what she was doing and that she was happy to keep the young girl save

Good pleasant story

This was quite enjoyable, although I found it a bit slow in parts. It is good build up of environment and story, but just gets a bit over explanatory on unimportant bits in my opinion. The characters are not very exciting. their backstory might have been, but it just did not develop far enough. I am not getting the next one.

3.5, so slightly above average to me
