Özet

A daring CIA operation threatens chaos in the Kremlin. Its execution is foiled by a Russian woman with secret loyalties.

CIA operatives Sia and Max enter Russia to recruit Vladimir Putin's moneyman. Sia works for a London firm that conceals the wealth of the super-rich. Max's family business in Mexico - a CIA front since the 1960s - is a farm that breeds high-end racehorses. They pose as a couple, and their targets are Vadim, Putin's private banker, and his wife Anna, who is both a banker and an intelligence officer. As they descend further into a Russian world dripping with luxury and rife with gangland violence, Sia and Max's hope may be Anna, who is playing a game of her own.

Careening between the horse ranch and the dark opulence of Saint Petersburg, Moscow X is both a gripping thriller of modern espionage and a daring work of political commentary on the conflict between Washington and Moscow.

Decent spy story, that feels rooted in research or experience. However it feels like a poor cousin to the author's first novel - Damascus Station. Long exposition about characters childhoods rarely add anything to the story but perhaps are added to make the novel more literary? As usual the love angle is the weakest element of the novel but hopefully no one is reading this novel for that. The worst bit about the audiobook is definitely the narrator's terrible and inconsistent accents. By the end of the novel I'm pretty sure he was reading the Russian characters in an Afrikaans accent. and not a good one at that...Worth a read but prepare to rage against the narrator.

Horrendous narration almost scuppers a decent spy novel

The narration is at times unintelligible - his attempt at tSouth African accent is frankly embarrassing and very hard to understand anything he’s attempting to say in a Russian accent, for the rest of the time his voice sounds like it’s on fast forward and I’m not sure he’s ever read a book before. This guy really ruins what is a good story. If you are easily annoyed by terrible narration don’t purchase this audiobook

Narration is horrendous

I wish narrators would stop persisting with accents they can’t do! The hopeless South African accent in this story detracts from the character and spoils the story. The story itself is interesting although a bit long winded. 50 pages less and it would have been better

A bit long winded and irritating narration

At first I was going to describe this a as a “slow burner” because it does take a while to get going, but I don’t think that’s accurate. What it really does is slowly dial up the tension with every scene with some of the chapters set in Russia so tense I had to pause to take a breath. Really enjoyable, brilliantly plotted and good performance. I think the only negative was the South African accent, which was a bit bizarre, but doesn’t distract

Incredibly tense

It’s a good yarn. But it takes some persistence. The accents, of which there are many, by this narrator at truly terrible. It took me a few false starts to finally persist and ignore the narrator to focus on the plot.

If you can get past the terrible accents - a fine spy romp
