Historical espionage at its very best. Set in 1938 in London and Vienna, a tense and atmospheric thriller told against a backdrop of uncertainty and fear as World War Two threatens.

As war looms over Britain and there is talk of gas masks and blackout, people are understandably jumpy and anxious. Stella Fry, who's been working in Vienna for a Jewish family, returns home with no job and a broken heart. She answers an advertisement from a famous mystery writer, Hubert Newman, who needs a manuscript typed. She takes on the job and is shocked the next day to learn of the writer's sudden, unexplained death. She is even more surprised when, twenty-four hours later, she receives Newman's manuscript and reads the Dedication:

To Stella, spotter of mistakes.

Harry Fox, formerly of Special Branch and brilliant at surveillance, has been suspended for some undisclosed misdemeanor. He has his own reasons for being interested in Hubert Newman. He approaches Stella Fry to share his belief that the writer's death was no accident.

What's more, since she was the last person to see Newman, she could be in danger herself.©2024 Jane Thynne (P)2024 Quercus Editions Limited Crime Thrillers Espionage Historical Mystery Spies & Politics Thriller & Suspense Samimi Kurgu Savaş

The book was repetitive and fanciful. The author did not even follow her own recommendations. The reader did not help either.

Mediocre

Conjures up the background atmosphere of late 1938 very well. Good plot twist. A tad unbelievable in places, particularly near the end

keeps you engaged to the end

A quaint very British story without much thrill, nowhere near as good as the Clara vine series

Very British

I have enjoyed all of Jane Thynne's books with the previous narrator Julie Teal, but this girl is not very good. She mispronounced the names of places and common words which spoilt the flow. It was so irritating that in the end that I gave up reading. I'll get it on Kindle and finish it there.

Appalling reader - mistakes galore.

The main two characters are well drawn and capture the essence of the time and drive the narrative. Very strong narration, loved the way that the story is built on the edge of a major period in history and touches on the major political and literary characters in a highly appropriate manner.

Excellent historical setting and a compelling story
