4 BC. As tensions build in Gaul and the druids manoeuvre the tribes towards general rebellion, Priscus and the diminishing senior staff of Caesar's army prepare to return to Britannia, this time with a vast army and a will to crush the tribes of that mysterious island. Meanwhile, Fronto contemplates a non-military future as he settles into the life of a married nobleman, socialising with Rome's elite and coming to terms with the decline in his fitness. In this year of rising troubles, Priscus will miss his former commander's presence more than ever. With rebellious Gauls, defiant Britons, vengeful giants, veteran gladiators and dangerous criminals, Fronto is pushed to the limits, driving him to a decision he dreads and a battle for his very life at the steaming, hellish land of Hades' Gate. I was so happy to meet Fronto again and follow him as he planned his revenge. So many new weird and frightening characters in Book 5. Looking forward to Book 6.

What a whirlwind of excitement and anguish ad I followed my Fronto!

Based on the writings of Caesar himself, these wonderful novels drop us straight into the world of Ancient Rome. Caesar is still in Gaul, dealing with uprisings snd the slaughter of two legions. Back in Rome, Frontus fights to protect his family. Beautifully crafted, great characters, wonderful gory action snd a plot that rips along.

Another cracking instalment

Compares with the Macro and Cato novels. Each book in this series seems to get progressively more “unputdownable”. Great story, loved the narration, mature characters but the author continues to add others with depth and authenticity. Moves at a tremendous pace, based on history but adds multiple layers of dramatic storytelling. Will be starting the next book tomorrow
