Immerse yourself in the gritty American Frontier in Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Read by actor Will Patton, with an exclusive foreword by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan.

A powerful, triumphant tribute to the American West and a masterful epic from the screenwriter of Brokeback Mountain.

This is the story of a group of audacious cowboys on a perilous cattle drive across the sprawling wilderness, from Texas to Montana. Bound by duty and hardened by the relentless frontier, their shared journey captures the enduring spirit of the West.

Lonesome Dove is more than an adventure, and deeper than a love story. It is the ultimate saga of the American West, with an unforgettable cast of heroes and outlaws and a narrative that is as unflinching as it is captivating. For fans of authentic Western Americana, McMurtry pulls you straight into the heart of 19th-century America – a world of triumph, betrayal, and survival.

Flush with authenticity
It’s like the gift of reading itself (Geoff Dyer)
An epic journey pitching men against nature, hostile Comanches and outlaws, played out against huge, inhospitable landscapes. You can feel the dust and the heat, and smell the sweat and the hides. The plotting and pacing never falters . . . Everyone should read it (Clare Chambers)

Fantastic book following a couple of retired Texas Rangers and a motley crew of helpers in a cattle drive from Texas to Montana in the twilight years of the old west. Funny and moving in parts, with some of the best characters I’ve read in years. It’s of its time, obviously, so be prepared for some discriminatory language and stereotypes. Narration was absolutely superb.

I cant see how this will ever leave my top 5. How a 2000 mile cattle drive from Southern Texas to Montana has you fully invested is remarkable.

This book both enlightened and destroyed me. The characterisation is excellent except for the Native Americans. But I think it is written from the perspective of the cowboys who didn't know or trust most of them. They also havent got a clue about the women. Lots to think about. I'm emotionally exhausted.

Wonderful and I will miss it
